Foreword

Modulator-Klystron Workshops have been held over the last ten years as a response to the fast-changing needs of the particle accelerator community and to those whose task it is to design, develop or maintain modulator-klystron systems. The first workshop was held in CERN in October 1991 and focused on improving the reliability of existing modulator-klystron (MDK) systems being used in the many linear accelerators world-wide. At that time, concern over the need to extend and improve high voltage component lifetimes as well as improve the reliability of MDK protection and operation equipment were priority issues. The increasing number of accelerator physics hours scheduled required a much higher availability from these systems than was then being achieved.

Later workshops held in SLAC in 1995 and 1998 concentrated on examining the current state of modulator design and attempted to extrapolate requirements for MDK systems to be used in the future electron-positron linear colliders. The emphasis was mainly on improving the AC wall-plug power to RF output power efficiency. The fourth MDK workshop, also held in SLAC in 1999, was directed towards the NLC modulator-klystron design requirements. This workshop examined in detail the SLAC baseline system with thyratron switching and standard PFN technology, whilst also looking at proposals using solid state high voltage modules, and in particular the development of the IGBT switched induction transformer scheme. All these workshops have had a very positive effect on design issues, and, very importantly have brought people from the electronics industry into the discussions to help provide solutions to a wide range of problems.

This workshop, organized by the PS division and held at CERN ("Salle du Conseil", bldg. 503-1-001) on 26th and 27th April 2001, will continue this detailed examination of different modulator-klystron system designs that will provide the RF power for future linear colliders. The important issues of efficiency, reliability, performance, design, construction and integration into the accelerator environment, with any impact these may have on the accelerator design, will be followed as underlying themes of the workshop’s six technology areas:

We hope that this workshop will help resolve some of the design problems, improve the performance of current solutions, encourage much more industrial involvement at an early stage, and raise new issues that concern this area of technology, as a major item in any new linear accelerator design. We are inviting not only participating experts, like yourself, but also commercial companies sponsoring this event who will exhibit products which may be of interest to the participants.

Pre-registration

Pre-registration for the workshop can only be made through this registration form.

The full registration fee of 100 CHF per participant will be payable (cash payment only!) at the early registration session on the evening of Wednesday 25th April at 7 pm, where a welcome drink will be offered ("Pas Perdus", bldg. 503 1st floor). A second registration session will be held before the workshop on the morning of 26th April between 7 and 8 am. The fee includes all documentation and the workshop dinner at the Edelweiss Hotel. Bus transport between CERN and this hotel will be provided. A dinner and transport fee of 85 CHF is being made for accompanying partners.

CERN Hostel reservations

A block of rooms (first come, first served) has been reserved in the CERN Hostel from 25 to 28 April. Please complete the form if you are interested. If no more rooms are available at the CERN Hostel or if you prefer to stay elsewhere, this list will help you to find accommodation.

Papers

Prospective authors are invited to submit an abstract (up to 200 words) before 19th February 2001. The accepted abstracts will be collected in book form and distributed at the workshop to all participants. Those papers that are accepted from the above technology areas, will be allocated 20 minutes for oral presentation. A limited number of papers can also be submitted for poster presentation. Authors are expected to send an electronic copy of their paper so that it can be directly included for publication on this web site (instructions for authors).
